Mr. Nelson’s cases span the areas of Environmental Law, Litigation, Appellate Practice, and Land Use & Zoning.
He has been Maryland’s most active and most successful private-sector plaintiff’s environmental lawyer since the mid-1980’s. He has successfully litigated
environmental cases in the United States District Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, Maryland’s circuit courts, the Maryland Court of Special Appeals, and the Maryland
Court of Appeals, as well as administrative agencies. His cases have been at the leading edge of the law. The Environmental Practice section of this website has additional information

In his litigation practice he has tried many jury and non-jury cases in the state trial courts and in the federal trial court. His jury victories include a
$5,600,000 verdict for a brain-injured patient after a four-week trial. He has also settled before trial nursing home, car accident, medical malpractice and commercial cases. The settlements include

Mr. Nelson has an active appellate practice and routinely appears in the appellate courts. Maryland’s highest court has accepted for review eleven of his cases
since 2007. His appellate cases have shaped the law regarding standing in the federal and state courts, the federal Clean Water Act, the test for special exceptions in Maryland, the need to comply
with a county master plan, industrial nuisances in Maryland, and thermal pollution of trout streams in Maryland. Videos of his recent arguments in Maryland’s highest court and a list of

Since the mid-1990’s, Mr. Nelson has represented citizens in land use and zoning cases throughout Maryland. The Land Use & Zoning Practice section of this

Mr. Nelson graduated from Haverford College in 1978 and the University of Maryland School of Law in 1981. He has been licensed to practice law in Maryland since 1981. Martindale-Hubbell, the
